A Chat With: Textile Designers

Wednesday, August 21, 2019

Have you ever wondered about how materials are made? And how the materials are turned into wonderful products and apparel? In this ACW, Jess Crane will be chatting with two textile designers who develop beautiful fabrics and materials that bring life to everyday homes, home goods and apparel. We will discuss the many facets of the textile design industry and different routes to developing materials.

After getting a look inside the industry, attendees will enjoy a guided, hands-on experience led by Kathryn Faull of Maresca Textiles. Each participant will develop their own textile print using a block printing method on a tea towel that they can take home! Supplies provided and included with ticket.

The event will include time to network with drinks and light bites.

FGI Chicago's A Chat With (ACW) series was created out of request from our members and launched in May of 2019 with great success. ACW events are exclusive and only allow around 20-30 attendees maximum. The concept of this series is to offer more intimate events where participants can be closely connected with our speakers and have more immersion in the topic. We gather attendee questions prior to the event so we can tailor the discussion to what you want to hear.

Speakers:

Kathryn Faull of Maresca Textiles

Originally from South Carolina, Kathryn Faull graduated from the textile department of the Rhode Island School of Design. As a student at RISD, Kathryn fell in love with the act of making. Whether through silkscreen printing, knitting, embroidery or painting-making things by hand became such an integral part of her design process and it continues to be the backbone of her work today. After RISD   she spent several years working in New York before moving back to the south to set up her textile design studio in Savannah, GA. Having grown up around interior design and architecture, it was clear when she opened her studio that she would focus on the development of fabrics for the interior design trade. In Savannah, her signature handmade-modern style was born, using the architecture, landscape, colors and history of the south as inspiration for many of her premier designs. In the spring of 2018 Kathryn and the studio moved to her husband's hometown of Chicago, which now serves as her newest source for creativity and design inspiration.

Erin Minckley of Relativity Textiles

Erin Minckley is the founder and designer of Relativity Textiles’ collections. Her artworks are the basis for each design. With her MFA in Fiber and Materials Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and two years of experience working in the manufacturing industry, Minckley uses her research and printing know-how to design globally inspired motifs with cultural narratives that span decades. Her desire to connect people to foreign cultures by way of art and design motivates her to give back to the makers of the world by donating a portion of her proceeds to organizations that support women’s economy, human rights and social services all around the world.
