The Height of Luxury:

The Rise of Art Deco and Haute Couture

This is a story of creative development in Paris in the first 3 decades of the 20th century.  Paris was the crucible in the development of modern art and enjoyed great prosperity during these decades.  The modern spirit of the times demanded luxury in all facets of life and the wonderully creative spirits obliged their clientele.

Art Deco and haute couture both developed and flourished during these critical years, legacies that still resonate strongly today.  In addition to prominent artists and writers, the lecture will feature the life and work of great designers (Frank, Arbus, Ruhlmann) and couturiers (Schiaparelli, Vionnet, Lanvin, Chanel, Mainbocher) and illustrate how their worlds intersected and inspired one another.
